The Health Benefits of Red Wine and Resveratrol

Many people sip a glass of wine with dinner to relax at the end of the day. But what if that glass of wine could actually improve your health? Research suggests that drinking red wine, in moderation, can actually improve your heart health and cholesterol.
Red wine contains antioxidants, which can help improve heart health by attacking free radicals that could damage cells.  While I'm not encouraging anyone to start drinking, consuming moderate amounts of red wine has been shown to benefit the heart.  But wine is not the only source of antioxidants, many fruits and vegetables also contain antioxidants and can contribute to better heart health.

Resveratrol is another key element in red wine that can improve your health. Research has shown that resveratrol can prevent damage to blood vessels, lower bad cholesterol and improve good cholesterol. Research also suggests that consuming resveratrol can protect against obesity, diabetes and heart disease. However, since resveratrol is found in the skin of grapes, (which is how it ends up in red wine) it should be noted that it is the fruit, not the alcohol, that can benefit your health. Other sources of resveratrol include peanuts, blueberries and cranberries.

So should you buy some wine and toast to your health? Maybe. Consuming small amounts of red wine periodically can provide health benefits, but drinking too much of any type of alcohol can lead to other serious health concerns and should be avoided. So be wise when drinking wine, and know that if you do enjoy a glass from time to time, you could be helping your heart.

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) Calorie Calculator

To lose weight you need to create a calorie deficit by eating fewer calories.  First, you need to know your basal metabolic rate (BMR), or the amount of calories you need for your body to perform normal functions like breathing and digesting food.   Use the BMR calculator to determine how many calories your body needs at rest.  This number will go up once you start to do physical activities, but this is a good starting point to determine how many calories you should be eating, and how many you need to cut to lose weight.  By eating fewer calories than your body needs for its basic functions, your body will be forced to burn fat as fuel to provide the energy to perform these functions.  This will help you lose weight.
